Your reflection has copied every move you've made since you were about eighteen months old — the age most people first recognize themselves in a mirror. This is the Bureau of Ordinary Things' seven rules for the night it blinks first. Case files 07 and 19 show what happens when someone breaks rule four, and the towel on the hook that was never theirs.

Science notes: The mirror self-recognition test was devised by psychologist Gordon Gallup in 1970 (Science) — humans typically pass it between 18 and 24 months. Magpies (Prior et al., PLoS Biology, 2008) and cleaner wrasse fish (Kohda et al., PNAS, 2019) have passed similar tests, and staring at your own face in dim light for several minutes can trigger the real "strange-face illusion" (Caputo, Perception, 2010). The story is fiction — the science is real.
