If your washing machine ever finishes a cycle with one more sock than you put in, do not keep it, do not look for its pair, and do not let the machine see you counting. There are seven rules — most people break the third on a Monday morning, and the seventh explains why the drum is round. Tonight you loaded twelve socks. You took out thirteen.

Science notes: Socks really do slip between the drum and the tub and end up in the drain pump filter — manufacturers' care instructions tell you to clean it. A 2016 survey commissioned by a washing machine maker found UK respondents reported losing about 1.3 socks a month on average. Many modern machines weigh the load and sense balance before adding water, spin at roughly 1,000–1,600 rpm, and lock the door until the drum fully stops — all from manufacturer manuals and appliance specs. The story is fiction — the science is real.
