Master Tung's acupuncture points can be better understood through knowing about the fascial planes and connective tissues. Points like 22.08 and 22.09 on the small intestine meridian are effective for lumbar pain, sciatica and knee pain. As the small intestine and bladder meridians are paired through the tai yang channel relationships, SI meridian points will influence the UB meridian. This is related to the cranio-sacral dynamic.
In myofascial anatomy the small intestine meridian is connected to the levator scapulae, rhomboids and scapularis muscles. This is why a point like small intestine 3 (SI 3) can be useful for neck and spinal pain. A good treatment for upper back pain is to use SI 3 with a group of points near SI 5. In Master Tung acupuncture, the points 33.10, 33.11 and 33.12 are on the small intestine meridian. These points are often used for digestive, liver, and heart patterns, but they are also very effective for treating upper back pain when the rhomboids are involved.
