La Fière Bridge was one of the most important objectives inland from Utah Beach on D-Day. Spanning the Merderet River west of Sainte-Mère-Église, it controlled a narrow causeway through flooded fields and marshland, making it a critical crossing point for movement into the interior of Normandy. For the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division, securing La Fière meant protecting the western flank of the Allied landings and preventing German forces from counterattacking toward the beachhead. In the early hours of June 6, 1944, paratroopers landed scattered across the Cotentin Peninsula, assembling under chaotic conditions to seize roads, bridges, and villages. At La Fière, American airborne troops encountered fierce resistance from German defenders determined to hold the crossing. The fighting quickly became brutal and close-range, with repeated attacks and counterattacks centered on the bridge and exposed causeway, where soldiers had little cover and were vulnerable to machine-gun, mortar, and artillery fire.
