In July of 1972, the town of Ashby Springs, Mississippi, paid a twenty-year-old dental hygiene student a dollar ninety an hour to drive its mosquito fog truck at dusk. On the night of the twentieth, the truck sat at the dead end of Ardis Street with its headlights on and the fogger running until the tank went dry at 11:40. Vicki Lynn Garrity was gone. Her log book was on the seat with the last page torn out, and every time she had ever written in it was eleven minutes wrong.
Three hundred volunteers searched for nine days from a command post in a churchyard. An innocent man lost everything. It took seventeen years, a railroad timetable, a highway widening, and a casket that weighed too much to explain what she had seen in the eleven minutes nobody counted. This case is fictional. The places, the weather, and the silence are not.
