We had a chance to go to one of the longest inhabited MAYA RUINS ,and only 8 miles away from home. Dzibilchaltún is a highly unique ancient Maya archaeological site, primarily because it was one of the longest-inhabited cities in the entire Maya world.
Archaeological evidence shows that people lived here continuously from around 500 BCE until the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century—a span of over 2,000 years. At its peak, the city covered roughly 16 square kilometers and housed a population of about 40,000 residents.
Location & Getting There
• Distance from Mérida: It sits about 15 miles (24 km) north of downtown Mérida, taking approximately 30 to 35 minutes to drive via Highway 261 (the Mérida-Progreso highway).
• Accessibility: The entrance and parking area are wheelchair accessible.
• Transportation Options: You can easily get there by renting a car, hailing an Uber or taxi from Mérida, or taking a local colectivo (shared van) heading toward Chablekal from the center of Mérida.
Sundays are free only for Mexican citizens and legal residents (with official ID or a permanent residency visa).
If you are a foreign tourist, you will still need to pay the entrance fee on Sundays.
Key Details to Keep in Mind:
• The Cost: For foreigners, the total fee is around 308 MXN. (This is split into an INAH federal fee and a Yucatán state government fee).
• Who Always Gets in Free? Regardless of the day of the week, entry is free for Mexican citizens/residents who are children under 13, students, teachers, seniors (60+), and people with disabilities (with valid ID).
• Crowd Warning: Because Sundays are free for locals, the site is generally much busier. If you want a quieter experience with fewer people in your photos, it is highly recommended to visit on a weekday morning.
• Important Site Update: While the ruins and the brand-new Museo Ichkaantijoo visitor center are fully open, Cenote Xlacah is currently closed for swimming.
Practical Information
• Hours: Open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
• Admission: Foreign visitors pay approximately 230 MXN and national visitors pay 90 MXN (payable at the site ticket office).
• Getting There: It is a straightforward 30-minute drive from Mérida heading north along the Mérida-Progreso highway (Highway 261). You can check official guidelines on the INAH Site.
Welcome to Dave and Rose Travels! 🇲🇽✨ We are a retired husband and wife living our absolute best life and exploring Mérida, Yucatán, México. Our entire outlook on life changed nearly three years ago when Dave survived two heart attacks and emergency open-heart surgery (a triple bypass).
Coming so close to losing Dave made us realize just how precious time is. From that moment on, living life to the fullest and traveling became our number one priority. The universe gave us our final push in November 2025.
After 36 years with his company, corporate downsizing led to an early retirement package offer. It had its hidden strings, but it was exactly the sign we needed. We took the leap, accepted the package, and turned our 10-year dream into reality. We packed up our lives and drove all the way to México! 🚗💨
Now, we are officially here, loving every minute of the life we spent a decade planning. Subscribe to Dave and Rose Travels to follow our expat adventures, road trip stories, travel guides, and life in beautiful Yucatán! 🌴✈️
