Lessons from Sukkot: Shelter without walls

We all build walls in our lives—careers, financial stability, relationships, routines, plans for the future. Many of those walls are good. But what happens when we begin asking them to give us our identity and ultimate security? In this message, Dan takes us through the story of Nehemiah, the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls, and the surprising celebration that followed. After completing the wall in just 52 days, the people rediscovered the Festival of Booths, or Sukkot—a yearly reminder to step away from the security of their homes and remember how God had provided for them in the wilderness. Centuries later, Jesus stood during this same festival and offered an invitation that still speaks to us today: “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.” Sometimes stepping outside our normal rhythms helps us notice what we’ve stopped noticing. Whether through a retreat, a quiet walk, time with others, or simply putting down our phones and being present, we can remember that our ultimate security isn't found in what we've built.
