Altar of Pain (formerly map 12) treats us with an expertly crafted cutscene which details how a past expedition of UAC marines made it to the titular altar and made off with the Unmaker. This ties up a couple of interesting visual cues we've been given before, such as the destination portal device seen in the previous map, and also the rather hard to reach Unmaker seen in map 09 (Panic), which is probably the exact same weapon seen here and the cause of much of the recent troubles.
As such, unlike before, the altar is found devoid of its prize this time around, atlhough we still need to press its switch for the yellow key.
I really like how the actors present in the cutscene "fade out" (a standard Doom 64 effect for despawning "things"), which reinforces how these are indeed past events. While it may seem a bit dumb to be impressed by something obvious, it's just the fact that a baseline effect fits this usage so well that gets me.
One thing to keep in mind is that, due to technical limitations, these entities (marines + motherdemon) cannot be effectively disposed off, while still counting towards the final kill tally.
As such, the maximum kill percentage for this map is 89%.
Other notable changes i noticed: an extra secret in the moat (chainsaw), an actual rocket launcher, whose absence from the original map always baffled me (we even find ammo, just not the weapon) and the secret exit now requires the wall to be shot in order to "open a hole" through it. In reality we're shooting a switch through a tiny fake section of the wall, which activates a geometry transformation. It is, therefore, possible to shoot at a wrong angle and miss the switch. That might leave the player under the impression that shooting the wall is the wrong method but no, just adjust the angle a little bit.
Start (and cutscene!): 00:00
Secret 1 (Supercharge): 00:30
Secret 2 (Chainsaw): 00:55
Rocket Launcher (the original didn't have one!): 03:50
Secret 3 (Secret exit): 08:40
