7.4% or 2.6% — what is actually happening with India’s GDP? India's latest GDP numbers have triggered a major debate. The official numbers show strong growth, while an alternative calculation using the older GDP series has been used to argue that growth could be as low as 2.6%. The controversy has also brought questions about the new GDP series, the change in base year, revisions to previous estimates and the way real growth is calculated. But is it really as simple as “7.4% is true” vs “2.6% is true”? Because sometimes the most important question isn't: “Which number should I believe?” It's: “What exactly are we comparing?” The official Q1 FY2026-27 estimate currently reports 7.8% real GDP growth, while the 7.4% figure relates to the FY2025-26 annual First Advance Estimate. The 2.6% figure comes from an alternative calculation using the older series, which has itself become a major point of methodological dispute.
