This training focuses on the Pronunciation criteria for the IELTS Speaking exam. It outlines the four core grading criteria—Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation—emphasizing that these work interdependently to determine a candidate's band score. Key topics covered include: Grammar Foundations: In this training, we highlight the importance of accurate Subject-Verb Agreement (SVA), simple tenses, and complex sentences to achieve a band 7.0. Pronunciation Features: To reach a high band score, students should master six core pronunciation features: 1. Sounds: Correct articulation of phonemes. 2. Stress: Using word, syllable, and sentence stress for clarity. 3. Basic Intonation Patterns: Avoiding robotic speech by emphasizing new information. 4. Emphasis: Using vocal variation to convey emotions, not just ideas. 5. Pausing for Meaning: Distinguishing between pausing to find ideas (not recommended) and pausing to structure meaning (crucial for flow). 6. Liaisons (Word Connections): Using smooth transitions between words, such as connecting 'do you' as 'dju'. Strategic Advice: Accent vs. Pronunciation: L1 (first language) accent is acceptable; pronunciation is about clarity and feature mastery, not mimicking Western accents. The Risk of Neglect: Ignoring pronunciation is a common pitfall; even with strong vocabulary and grammar, poor pronunciation acts as a weak foundation that can lower overall scores.
