Everyone calls him "the Magnificent." Lorenzo de' Medici is remembered as the ruler who single-handedly built the Florentine Renaissance. He was a patron of Botticelli and Michelangelo, master diplomat, the man history gave a five-star review. But the same records historians use to praise him also contain a much messier story: a family bank quietly collapsing on his watch, public funds allegedly redirected to cover it, and a debate among historians that's still not settled. Was Lorenzo a brilliant statesman undone by forces outside his control, or a mediocre businessman who used the city's money to hide his own failures? We dig into both sides of the argument. The surprising fact is that he ruled Florence for over 20 years without ever holding a single official title.
