Snow lies on the old stone terrace, and the first light is touching the mountains. Below, a sea of clouds stretches to the horizon — and rising out of it is a city of white stone: blue-tiled roofs, long arched bridges, waterfalls falling into the mist, and amber lights still glowing in the windows.
A traveler has stopped at the edge to look, her eyes hidden beneath a woven hat. Beside her, a great phoenix of silver, indigo and gold rests on the stone, its metal feathers folded close. She does not move for a long time. Whether the city is where they were heading, or only somewhere along the way, is yours to imagine.
The City Across the Clouds is an original fantasy journey in music, built around the Japanese biwa — a struck note that bends, and the silence that follows it. Koto and Celtic harp move quietly beneath. When the music opens out, quick runs of biwa meet the long, smooth line of a whistle, and somewhere in between, a shakuhachi breathes a single unhurried phrase. Phrases stop where you do not expect, and settle a moment late, but a familiar theme keeps finding its way back. At the very end, one last strike of the biwa, and only its echo remains.
Japanese and Celtic colors, a land of mist that belongs to no map — and a road that keeps going.
Let it keep you company while you read, create, focus, unwind, or wander somewhere far away.
Somewhere unfamiliar, yet somehow like home.
