Are modern microlights the future of UK general aviation? Or have they become too expensive to be the affordable alternative to traditional aircraft?
I fly both a Cessna 172 and a Skyranger Nynja, so I've been looking at the real differences between conventional GA and modern three-axis microlights, including purchase prices, running costs, maintenance, training, useful load and their limitations.
We also researched the UK second-hand aircraft market using AFORS. In our selected September 2026 sample, the median microlight asking price was £46,000 compared with £54,750 for conventional SEP aircraft. But the median known ages were 17 and 55 years respectively!
Of course, microlights aren't necessarily cheap. We even found a second-hand EuroFox advertised for almost £100,000.
In this video, I explore whether newer 600 kg microlights, efficient engines, modern equipment and potentially lower operating costs make them an increasingly attractive option for recreational pilots.
We also look at the compromises — including two-seat limitations, useful load and weather sensitivity — and the recent CAA licensing changes that could make starting your flying journey in a microlight more attractive, even if you eventually want to progress towards professional aviation.
Having trained for my PPL in a Cessna 172, I'm now working towards hopefully becoming a three-axis microlight instructor in 2027. I'll explain why I think this part of UK aviation has such a promising future.

A NOTE ABOUT THE COMPARISONS
The AFORS analysis is a selected snapshot of 20 microlights and 12 conventional SEP aircraft. Prices are advertised asking prices, not achieved selling prices. Age statistics use only aircraft with known manufacture years.
The operating costs shown are from my own aircraft groups and will vary depending on fuel prices, maintenance, engine reserves, ownership arrangements and other charges.
Aircraft useful-load examples use published typical weights. Always use the approved documentation for the individual aircraft when planning a flight.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Are modern microlights the future of recreational GA in the UK? Have you moved between microlights and conventional aircraft? I'd love to hear about your experiences, particularly with running costs, maintenance and touring.
