Why does this melody sound different each time it returns?
Chopin's Nocturne Op.9 No.2 is one of the most beloved works in the piano repertoire.
The nocturne was not invented by Chopin. The genre was pioneered by the Irish composer John Field, whose lyrical piano works had an important influence on Chopin.
Chopin took the idea much further, transforming the nocturne into a deeply expressive and sophisticated form of piano music.
In Op.9 No.2, the right hand sings above a gently flowing accompaniment.
As the main melody returns, Chopin decorates and reshapes it. The melody remains familiar, yet its expression subtly changes each time.
It is almost as if a singer were repeating the same words while giving them a different meaning with every return.
Listen closely to these transformations and enter the intimate world of Chopin's nocturne.
