Chandanam is a Mohiniattam choreography from the Desi repertoire that has been researched and developed by Guru Nirmala Paniker. The glorious qualities of 'Chandanam' (sandalwood) is elucidated in this choreographic work. The story of Palazhi Madanam (churning of the milky ocean) is described while the great snake Vasugi vomits the Kalakoota poison that can destroy the universe. Lord Shiva consumes the Kalakoota poison to save the universe but unfortunately collapses as a result. Goddess Parvathi assumes the fearsome form of Kali and takes some 'Chandanam' from the chest of Lord Vishnu and rubs it on Lord Shiva's chest, thus reviving him. This composition is in Saurashtra Ragam and Aiyadi Thalam Snippets from a performance for Brisbane Maharashtra Mandal.
