Join us for another fast-paced art history livestream of The Autist’s Circle.
In Season 3, Episode 3, we begin a two-part look at Michelangelo Buonarroti, one of the defining figures of the Italian Renaissance.
Part 1 follows Michelangelo from his early years in Florence through his rise as a sculptor and into the enormous commission that would transform the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
We begin with his childhood, his apprenticeship in the workshop of Domenico Ghirlandaio, and his time in the Medici circle, where he studied classical sculpture, anatomy, and the human figure. From there, we follow him to Rome and examine the work that first established his reputation: the Pietà.
We then return to Florence for David, Michelangelo’s colossal interpretation of the biblical hero and one of the most recognizable sculptures in Western art. We look at the difficult block of marble he inherited, the political meaning the statue acquired in republican Florence, and the anatomical and psychological tension that make the figure so distinctive.
The second half of the episode turns to Pope Julius II and the road to the Sistine Chapel.
We explore the original tomb commission that brought Michelangelo back to Rome, the circumstances behind his reluctant move into large-scale fresco painting, and the structure of the Sistine ceiling itself.
Our main focus is the central Genesis cycle, beginning with the first acts of Creation:
🎨 The Separation of Light from Darkness
🎨 The Creation of the Sun, Moon and Plants
🎨 The Separation of Land from Water
🎨 The Creation of Adam
We look at Michelangelo’s evolving approach to composition, the increasingly monumental scale of his figures, and the way his experience as a sculptor shaped the bodies that dominate the ceiling.
Part 1 concludes with The Creation of Adam, one of the most famous images in art history, and the extraordinary tension Michelangelo creates in the tiny gap between the hands of God and Adam.
Part 2 will return to the Sistine Chapel to complete the ceiling program before moving into Michelangelo’s later sculpture, The Last Judgment, his final years, and his architectural legacy in Rome.
