You have tried to picture them. The four-faced creature. The wheel covered in eyes. And every illustration you have seen is slightly off — the creature-feature version looks like a monster, the reverent version looks like a greetings card, and neither looks like something you would fall on your face in front of. The problem is not the artists, and it is not you. *Ezekiel wrote that vision in Babylon.* He was a deportee, taken in 597, sitting by an irrigation canal several hundred miles from the only temple he was permitted to serve in. And the empire he was living in guarded its palace gates with colossal carved figures that had **a human head, the body of a bull or lion, and the wings of an eagle**. Human. Lion. Bull. Eagle. Read Ezekiel 1 again. He is describing the throne of God in the visual language of the empire that deported him — deliberately, so that people who walked past those gates every day would understand him instantly.
