We explain why the Republic of Singapore Navy’s Independence class Littoral Mission Vessel (LMV) succeeded where the US Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) struggled. While both programs set out to dominate shallow, congested coastal waters using modular mission packages and radical crew reduction, their execution differed drastically. The US Navy LCS faced cost overruns, mechanical failures, and complex swappable mission systems. In contrast, Singapore engineered the LMV with a pragmatic design, featuring an Integrated Command Centre, reliable diesel-based propulsion, integrated radar mast, and fixed core armaments. This video compares naval strategy, warship design, shipboard automation, and littoral warfare engineering lessons across the US Navy and the Singapore Navy.
