Cardio or weights for weight loss? Both have roles—and the benefits of exercise extend beyond the scale.
Does exercise still help when the scale barely moves? This episode of The Evidence Explained examines the 2026 American Heart Association scientific statement on physical activity in obesity treatment and cardiometabolic health.
We use the paper's Figure 1 to explore benefits beyond weight loss, aerobic and resistance activity, long-term maintenance, obesity medication, bariatric surgery and practical counselling. The figure is a conceptual framework, not a trial outcome graph. We distinguish broad health guidance from less certain treatment-specific exercise doses and explain why the liraglutide combination trial does not establish conclusive additional weight loss versus liraglutide alone.
Presented by Stefan Porubcin, MD, PhD., Associate Professor of Internal Medicine.
