Dead Channel — Original 90s Grunge | Resonance Tapes

A 90s-style grunge track about leaving the TV on a channel that shows nothing. The antenna has been bent since summer and I never bothered to fix it — snow across the whole screen, which honestly looks a bit like weather. Neighbours ask if it's broken and I tell them it's on purpose. Everyone else wants a signal; I like the in-between, where nothing is asking me a question. Lyric: "Give me static instead" It runs on the series frame — 90s grunge, 117 bpm, F minor, four power chords looped the whole way — but the subject and the sound line up unusually well here. Quiet verses on a clean two-note guitar figure and a melodic bass, one word repeated through the pre-chorus over a rising line, then fuzz and tom fills for the chorus. The vocal is raw, mumbled low in the verses and shouted at the top, and the solo traces the vocal melody. Mastering is left light so the chorus lands with its full jump. About 5.8 minutes. The picture is a wall of old televisions stacked to the ceiling, every one of them showing the same blue snow, and she sits on the floor in front of them with her back to us, papers scattered around her. It holds still through the whole track, with only the spectrum along the bottom of the frame responding to the music. It was made for the hours when you would rather not be asked anything, and it works behind work that needs no thinking. There is also a 45-second Shorts cut of the same track on the channel.
