Ancient DNA Finally Reveals the REAL Origin of Trinidad's First People
The story most people learn is that Trinidad's indigenous population was essentially wiped out within a generation of European contact, leaving nothing behind but a name on a map. Genetic testing on a living community just proved that's wrong — and the record runs straight through a mission town founded in 1749.
This video reads the actual genetic record. Banwari Trace, a site in southwestern Trinidad confirmed as the oldest documented human settlement in the entire Caribbean, dated to 7,200 years before present. A 2015 study out of the University of Pennsylvania and Notre Dame, led by geneticist Dr. Jada Benn Torres and conducted with the full consent of the Santa Rosa First Peoples Community of Arima, detecting maternal indigenous ancestry in 42% of participants and the first-ever documented indigenous paternal Y-chromosome lineage (haplogroup Q-M3) found anywhere in the Lesser Antilles. Two separate migration waves thousands of years apart, folded into one population colonial administrators flattened into a single word — a word that almost certainly wasn't even a self-given name. And a 2019 follow-up study comparing that same community directly to the Garifuna of St. Vincent, uncovering two genuinely different genetic histories behind two similar claims of indigenous descent.
Every claim tonight traces back to a named researcher, a named study, and a named journal — no assumption, only what the genome actually says.
