Seven years ago, Guyana produced zero barrels of oil. Today it pumps around 900,000 barrels a day, and a fifth giant production ship could soon push it past 1 million barrels a day. That would be a first for any CARICOM country. In this video, we break down how a country of under a million people became one of the fastest-growing oil producers on Earth. We cover the 2026 fuel shock that hit Jamaica, Trinidad and the wider Caribbean, why oil companies ignored Guyana for decades, and how ultra-deepwater oil is pulled from more than 1,500 metres of ocean. We also look at the new Uaru project and the Errea Wittu FPSO, who actually owns the oil, and where the money is going. We also cover the honest side: the 2016 oil contract, the risks of depending on one block and one consortium, rising living costs, the Venezuela border claim, and what Guyana’s boom means for Jamaica’s own offshore oil search and Trinidad’s gas crisis. From Georgetown to Kingston to Port of Spain to Flatbush, this story affects the whole region. 👇 Tell us in the comments: should Caribbean countries chase their own oil discoveries, or build stronger energy links with Guyana and Suriname? 📚 Key sources: Guyana Ministry of Natural Resources, Guyana 2026 National Budget, ExxonMobil, S&P Global, International Energy Agency, Jamaica Gleaner, Jamaica Observer, Energy Chamber of Trinidad and Tobago, OilNOW, Reuters. ⚠️ Production figures and project timelines are based on official and industry data available at the time of publishing. Uaru’s first-oil date is a company forecast and may change.
