Wizards (1977) — Mutants, Magic & Cult Animated Fantasy

Wizards (1977) is a bizarre and unforgettable animated cult movie from legendary filmmaker Ralph Bakshi. Set in a post-apocalyptic future where magic has returned to Earth, this strange blend of fantasy, science fiction, and counterculture animation features mutants, fairies, elves, robots, ancient technology, dark magic, and two powerful twin brothers destined to become enemies. Marc, Bill, and Rena break down Bakshi’s distinctive animation style, the strange story, unforgettable characters, bizarre imagery, Nazi-inspired propaganda, and the wildly unconventional world of Wizards. We also look at the movie’s place in 1970s animation and why it has remained such a fascinating cult film decades after its release. Is Wizards a misunderstood animated masterpiece, a bizarre relic of 1970s counterculture, or one of the strangest movies we've ever watched?
