In the backwoods of Georgia, along the dusty stretch known as Tobacco Road, the Lester family has farmed the land for over a century—but their glory days are long gone. The current patriarch, Jeeter Lester (Charley Grapewin), is a shiftless dreamer who would rather beg, borrow, or steal than do an honest day's work, leaving his long-suffering wife Ada (Elizabeth Patterson) and their two remaining children, Dude (William Tracy) and Ellie May (Gene Tierney), to scrape by in grinding poverty. When the bank forecloses on their land, Captain Tim Harmon (Dana Andrews) intervenes, convincing the banker to let the Lesters stay—if they can raise $100 in rent by the following Sunday. With no money and no prospects, Jeeter hatches a series of schemes to get the cash, including marrying off his son to the recently widowed Sister Bessie Rice (Marjorie Rambeau), who has just received $800 in life insurance money. But Bessie has plans of her own, and Jeeter's attempts to sell the car she buys for Dude end in disaster. Directed by John Ford and adapted from Erskine Caldwell's notorious novel and the long-running Broadway play, this 1941 comedy-drama was softened for the Production Code, trading the source material's raw grit for a lighter, more sentimental tone—yet it remains a vivid, eccentric portrait of rural Southern poverty, family dysfunction, and stubborn resilience in the face of hopelessness.
