Humanoid robots are learning to operate vehicles built for people. But driving is only part of the challenge. What happens when the robot needs to park, climb out, open a gate, or carry equipment?
We explore the HAINZ humanoid chauffeur project, Japan’s Musashi driving experiments, robot go-karts, Yamaha’s MOTOBOT, and the lessons of the DARPA Robotics Challenge. These examples reveal why putting a robot behind the wheel is so difficult—and why doing the entire job could matter more than driving alone.
HAINZ currently operates a truck simulator; real-vehicle track testing is a planned next step. The other robots featured are separate research projects and demonstrations.
