1996 Bulldog Midland National Rally
The 1996 Bulldog Midland National Rally was part of the busy British national rallying calendar, bringing together leading club competitors and championship contenders for a demanding test of speed, car preparation and crew consistency. The event’s traditional place in the Midlands rally scene made it an important fixture for drivers seeking valuable championship points and a strong result against familiar rivals.
National rallies of this era attracted a varied field, from powerful four-wheel-drive machinery to competitive two-wheel-drive Escorts and other popular clubman rally cars. For the crews, the challenge was to balance outright pace with reliability, as a small mistake or mechanical problem could quickly undo the work of several successful stages.
The rally took place on Saturday, 26 October 1996, with Aberystwyth serving as the start and finish, and the route taking crews through the demanding forests of mid-Wales. The event incorporated three separate competitions: the Mintex National Rally, the Historic Rally and the Meirion Clubmans Rally.
The headline story in the national event was the performance of Steve Hill, who took advantage of reigning Mintex National Champion Chris Mellors’ decision to miss the final round. Hill rose to the occasion, defeating the more powerful Renault Mégane machinery and securing his first outright stage-rally victory. It was a significant achievement for the British national rally scene, demonstrating that determination and consistent pace could overcome the advantage of newer, technically advanced cars.
The 1996 Bulldog Midland Rally was also notable for introducing a separate Historic Rally permit, bringing historic competitors into the programme for the first time. With the national championship, historic competition and clubman rally running alongside one another, the event offered a varied celebration of British rallying in the forests of Wales. It marked an important step in the development of the Bulldog Rally and the beginning of a successful long-term association with its sponsor.
