1995 John Harrison Dukeries Rally
The 1995 John Harrison Dukeries Rally provided a spectacular contest on the Nottinghamshire forest roads, with the event forming part of the BTRDA Rally Championship calendar. For the leading crews, the Dukeries was an important opportunity to score valuable championship points, while for the local rallying public the main attraction was the spectacular Alfa-Ferrari of Andy Burton and Rob Morgan.
Burton was enjoying an increasingly successful 1995 season in the distinctive four-wheel-drive Alfa-based machine. Although often mentioned alongside the leading BTRDA Gold Star crews, Burton was actually contesting the BTRDA Silver Star Championship, which in 1995 catered for non-homologated two- and four-wheel-drive machinery. The Gold Star title that year was for Formula 2 front-wheel-drive cars, with Ricky Evans and Ian Butcher ultimately sharing the championship honours.
At the Dukeries, however, Burton's Alfa-Ferrari was the car everyone had to beat. Burton and Morgan attacked the forest stages with the commitment that had made the car one of the most spectacular sights in British national rallying. The combination of the Alfa bodywork and Ferrari-derived engineering gave Burton a machine with enormous performance, and on the fast Nottinghamshire stages it proved extremely effective.
The result was a clear victory for Andy Burton and Rob Morgan, giving Burton another important BTRDA success and adding his name to the distinguished list of Dukeries winners. Contemporary and later records confirm the victory, with the official Dukeries history recording Burton and Morgan as the 1995 winners in the Alfa-Ferrari.
The victory was particularly significant in the context of Burton's championship campaign. The BTRDA's own championship history records that he went on to win the 1995 Silver Star Championship, establishing himself as one of the outstanding performers in the series during the mid-1990s.
For spectators around the Dukeries forests, though, the championship classifications mattered less than the spectacle. Burton's Alfa-Ferrari was an unmistakable presence, combining speed, noise and sideways attitude, and its charge through the stages turned the 1995 John Harrison Dukeries Rally into one of the memorable events of the season.
