After finishing second at Singapore, Hamilton confirmed what the FIA ADUO assessment already ruled: Red Bull's engine is the benchmark — but Ferrari is struggling to match it. Red Bull's DM01 internal combustion engine was measured as the most powerful on the F1 grid by the FIA's ADUO assessment, earning benchmark status that ironically froze Red Bull from any new hardware upgrades. While Ferrari and Mercedes received additional homologations to close the gap, Verstappen and Red Bull found another way forward: calibration, software optimization, and energy deployment work with ExxonMobil. The gains have been real and measurable. Hamilton, who finished second to Verstappen in the Singapore Sprint by 2.591 seconds, acknowledged the engine's raw power during his post-race interview: "To overtake the most powerful engine on the grid is not so easy." Toto Wolff echoed the concern after watching Red Bull's double victory at Singapore, saying the ICE "seems to be very competitive" and praising how the team's power unit had come together as a complete package. But Red Bull's chief engineer Ben Hodgkinson revealed something even more troubling: they started the 2026 season with "quite immature calibrations" and have been chasing perfect extraction of the engine's potential ever since. Each race brought improvements through strategic recalibration, turning what looked like a penalty (the hardware freeze) into an unexpected advantage — a team forced to innovate in every other direction, and succeeding against the regulations designed to stop them. 00:00 Hamilton's Admission at Marina Bay 02:33 When Porsche Nearly Joined Red Bull 05:24 FIA Benchmark Freezes Red Bull Upgrades 08:00 Hardware Frozen, Calibration Unlocked 10:40 Straight-Line Speed Edge in Qualifying 13:11 Hodgkinson's Calibration Secrets Exposed 15:41 Software Gains From ExxonMobil Partnership Subscribe for daily F1 news and updates!
