How can one vehicle help a sheriff’s office bring new technology into the field and test it before buying it for the whole fleet? In this Public Safety Insight webinar, sponsored by Samsung, host Scot Haug takes you inside the Oakland County (Michigan) Sheriff’s Office Technology Unit and its Tech vehicle.
Oakland County is the 17th largest sheriff’s office in the country, with about 1,500 employees covering 950 square miles. Tech-1 is a 2026 police-package Tahoe set up as a “sandbox.” Vendor partners put the latest technology in it, and deputies try it out at urban, suburban, and rural substations. Only what works on the road goes to the fleet.
Featuring:
Captain Steve Schneider, Chief Technology & Innovation Officer, Oakland County Sheriff’s Office
Keith Redlin, Director, Public Sector & Safety, Samsung, and Tactical Flight Officer, Oakland County SO
What you’ll learn:
Mobile policing with Samsung DeX: replacing the in-car computer with a docked smartphone and saving $2,500–$3,500 per car
A walk-around tour of Tech-1: an LED message board, a drone detection system with about a 3-mile range, a 55" pull-out screen in the rear command workspace, and a 7-in-1 antenna with a dedicated satellite path
Keeping a connection when networks are overloaded: priority service, FirstNet, T-Mobile T-Priority and satellite backup
How the agency put a Starlink Mini on a helicopter for about $1,500 plus $75 a month, replacing an $830,000 microwave contract
Telling impressive tech apart from useful tech, and why deputy feedback decides what gets kept
Practical ways small and mid-size agencies can get vendor help with limited budgets
ATAK (Android Team Awareness Kit): free software for a shared, real-time map of where everyone is on a scene
