In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Nachizya Edith Namukanga, a passionate public health researcher whose work is helping reshape how we understand and respond to adolescent health challenges in Zambia.
At the heart of her research is primary dysmenorrhea — commonly known as painful menstrual cramps — a condition that can significantly affect the well-being, education and everyday lives of adolescent girls.
Dr. Namukanga's journey began not simply with research, but through witnessing the experiences of girls in classrooms — young people trying to navigate menstrual pain while attending lessons, sitting examinations and participating fully in school life.
What sets her work apart is her commitment to meaningful adolescent participation. Rather than viewing girls simply as research subjects, she engages them as partners whose experiences, perspectives and ideas can help shape better solutions.
Through participatory workshops, co-designed approaches and open community dialogue, her work creates space for adolescent girls to have a voice in conversations and interventions that directly affect their health and well-being.
This episode goes beyond menstrual health. It is a conversation about education, agency, dignity and the importance of listening to young women's voices.
Join us as we break the silence around menstrual pain, challenge misconceptions and explore how research informed by lived experience can contribute to healthier, more supportive environments for adolescent girls.
