On March 6, 1945, a German Panther near Cologne Cathedral knocked out an American Sherman and left the U.S. advance facing a deadly roadblock. The crew of the M26 Pershing Eagle 7 from E Company, 32nd Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored Division moved in from a neighboring street after commander Robert Early reconnoitered the Panther’s position. The plan was to enter the intersection, stop, fire, and reverse into cover-but when driver William McVey saw the Panther’s gun turning toward them, he kept the Pershing moving. Gunner Clarence Smoyer fired the first 90mm round before the tank stopped, penetrating the Panther, while loader John DeRiggi prepared the follow-up rounds that finished the engagement. Using the famous U.S. Army Signal Corps footage alongside crew testimony and later evidence, this video reconstructs the Cologne tank duel, explains what happened to the Sherman and Panther crews, and separates what the cameras captured from what the men inside the tanks could actually see.
