Why did God tell Moses to remove his sandals at the burning bush?
In Exodus 3, Moses is standing before the burning bush when God gives him a strange command: “Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.”
But was this command only about reverence?
In this Bible study, we explore the Hebrew word na'al, the ancient meaning of sandals, land, authority and ownership, and why removing a sandal could represent surrendering a claim. We will also follow this detail through Ruth, David, Isaiah, Passover and Joshua to see why the same command appears again before Israel enters the Promised Land.
The sandals were a small detail — but they may reveal something much bigger about Moses, holy ground and what it means to stand before God.
Scripture explored: Exodus 3, Ruth 4, Joshua 5, Exodus 12, Isaiah 20, 2 Samuel 15.
