Why did Jacob give Joseph that famous coat — and was it really a “coat of many colors”? Genesis 37 uses the Hebrew phrase ketonet passim, a rare expression that appears only twice in the entire Bible. Some translations say “many colors.” Others say “ornamented,” “long-sleeved,” or describe a garment reaching toward the hands and feet. So what did Joseph’s robe actually mean? In this Bible study, we explore the Hebrew behind ketonet passim, why the same phrase appears again on Tamar, a daughter of King David, and why Joseph’s brothers may have seen far more than a colorful gift when they watched him walking toward them. The robe may have represented favoritism — but it may also have carried a message about rank, inheritance, and who would stand at the head of Jacob’s household. We will also follow the theme of garments through Joseph’s story: the robe stripped from him at Dothan, the cloak used against him in Potiphar’s house, the fine linen Pharaoh later gives him, and the five sets of clothing Joseph eventually gives Benjamin. Scripture explored: Genesis 37–50 and 2 Samuel 13.
