In 1258, the Mongols destroyed Baghdad, one of the greatest cities in the world. Aleppo and Damascus fell soon after. Nothing seemed able to stop the Mongol advance toward Egypt.
Then, on 3 September 1260, at a place called Ain Jalut in Palestine, the Mongol army finally met a force that would not break.
Sultan Qutuz led the Mamluk army out of Egypt, with the commander Baybars playing a key role. Facing them was Kitbuqa, the Mongol general left in Syria with a smaller force after Hulagu Khan turned back. Mamluk cavalry against Mongol horsemen, on an open plain.
In this video, we cover the full story: the Mongol storm across the Muslim world, the rise of the Mamluks in Egypt, the road to Ain Jalut, the battle itself, and its aftermath.
We also keep the history honest. Medieval sources differ on the exact tactics of the battle, and Ain Jalut did not destroy the Mongol Empire. What it did was end the Mongols' short-lived westward advance in Syria and become a major turning point in the Mamluk-Mongol conflict.
