This Sikh Temple Will Feed Anyone for Free

I heard that Sikh temples in India called Gurdwaras feed anyone who comes through their doors — regardless of who they are or where they come from. So while I was in Delhi, I decided to visit Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, one of the city’s most important Sikh Gurdwaras, to experience it for myself. I arrived knowing very little about what to expect. After leaving my shoes at the entrance, I made my way inside and somehow ended up trying halwa before meeting a local girl who was also visiting the Gurdwara for the first time. She ended up joining me for the rest of the experience. Together we explored the Gurdwara, sat beside the beautiful water surrounding the complex, and eventually made our way to the langar hall, where people from completely different backgrounds sit together and are served a meal. We waited for our turn, sat on the floor alongside everyone else, and were served chapati, a delicious lentil, and a potato curry. What started as a simple question — can a Mexican walk into a Sikh Gurdwara in India and be fed? — became a fascinating introduction to Sikh hospitality, community and the tradition of langar.
