Two Danish Sisters Wore the Crowns of Britain and Russia—Then One Lost Everything
As girls, Alexandra and Dagmar of Denmark shared an attic bedroom and made their own clothes; one became Queen of Britain and great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II, the other Empress of Russia and mother of Tsar Nicholas II. Alexandra lost her hearing, her husband's loyalty and the son she called her angel, while Dagmar lost four of her six children and refused to believe her son had been murdered. In 1919 it was Alexandra's son, King George V, who sent the battleship that carried Dagmar out of Russia, two years after he had withdrawn Britain's offer of asylum to the Tsar.
