Pulukisi is one of the lively traditional characters seen during Indra Jatra in Bhaktapur. It is traditionally portrayed as a large white elephant, representing Indra’s elephant, Airavata.
According to local tradition, Pulukisi is believed to have come to Bhaktapur searching for Indra, who was said to have been captured during the festival. The energetic movement, music, and playful chasing of Pulukisi make it one of the most entertaining parts of the Jatra.
More than just a performance, Pulukisi represents Bhaktapur’s ancient Newar culture, mythology, community participation, and living festival tradition. Even today, when Pulukisi appears in the streets, the atmosphere of Bhaktapur becomes full of excitement and celebration. 🙏🐘
