Leaving the quiet morning streets of Pamplona behind, the trail climbs through open fields toward the windswept ridge of Alto del Perdón, where life-sized rusted iron sculptures of pilgrims stand silhouetted beneath spinning wind turbines and expansive valley views. A steep, knee-jarring descent over loose stones leads into the valley. We take a side quest to the 12th-century church of Santa María de Eunate—a solitary octagonal sanctuary encircled by free-standing stone arches standing peaceful in the open fields.
