Japan just built a computer chip technology that could end Apple and Qualcomm's entire silicon roadmap. NTT's Photonics-Electronics Convergence (PEC) system replaces electrical copper wiring inside chips with lasers — cutting power consumption to one-eighth of a traditional server while hitting 51.2 terabits per second, more than triple what Nvidia's most advanced AI GPUs require.
In this video we break down:
• How Joule heating and "dark silicon" are physically capping Apple and Qualcomm's three-nanometer chips
• NTT's IOWN initiative — backed by Japan's government, targeting a 100x cut in power consumption and 125x more network capacity
• How Mach-Zehnder interferometers let chips transmit data as light instead of electrons through copper
• Why Intel and SK Hynix are already joining NTT's optical computing alliance instead of competing with it
• The real rollout roadmap: IOWN 3.0 around 2028–2029, and IOWN 4.0 — optical transceivers embedded inside the processor itself — by 2032
This isn't a faster chip. It's Japan quietly building the optical foundation that Apple and Qualcomm will eventually have no choice but to license.
