In this walking tour, we start at Taksim Square and explore one of Istanbul’s liveliest and most famous districts: Beyoğlu. We join the crowds on Istiklal Street, wander through the streets of Asmalımescit and continue into the historic area known as Pera. Beyoğlu has been a meeting point for different cultures for centuries. Istiklal Street was once known as Grande Rue de Péra and Cadde-i Kebir. It took its current name after the founding of the Turkish Republic. The historic buildings, arcades and varied architecture along the street still reflect its past. Today, Istiklal Street is full of shops, cafés, restaurants, pastry shops and cultural venues. The nostalgic tram runs through the avenue, while the crowds keep it lively throughout the day. Asmalımescit’s side streets, with their cafés and restaurants, add to Beyoğlu’s distinctive atmosphere. Tourists are especially drawn to this area because, in one walk, they can experience Istanbul’s history, architecture, shopping, food and everyday street life.
