Located in Fukagawa City, Hokkaido, Togairo Pass (pronounced Totoro Pass) is a unique tourist spot that naturally brings to mind Studio Ghibli’s classic animated film, My Neighbor Totoro. Situated on a high plateau overlooking the vast Ishikari Plain, it is a beloved destination where visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views day and night, equipped with a convenient parking park. Located just below the parking area sits the famous yellow "Catbus," welcoming visitors with its whimsical presence. From a Storage Shed to a Popular Photo Spot The bus was originally a decommissioned minibus used by local farmers as a storage shed for agricultural tools. However, inspired by the unique place name "Togairo" (which sounds like Totoro), local volunteers came together in the late 1990s to paint the vehicle in the likeness of the "Catbus" from My Neighbor Totoro. Today, together with the beautiful surrounding scenery, the painted bus has turned into a highly popular photo spot that brings smiles to everyone who visits. If you ever find yourself in Fukagawa, it is definitely a destination worth checking out!
