A phantom carnival rises once every seven years in a dry cornfield, run by a Shadow-Merchant who trades miracles for memories and shadows. When a farmhand loses his shadow to a "loan" with wet ink, Gront Spoketer walks into the fair for a duel of wits and riddles. The steam calliope wheezes further out of tune as the crowd thins, and the price of a wrong answer is a memory. Genre & Mood: Gothic Americana / Creepy Carnival Dark Country. Upbeat and bouncy, with slow, tense riddle duels in the middle. Key Instrumentation: Distorted steam calliope, bowed musical saw, fast acoustic flatpicking, tambourine, walking upright bass, boot-stomp, low male barker choir, gravelly baritone. Story Themes: Stolen shadows, bargains with fine print, riddles and memory, small prices paid. #GrontSpoketer #SunoAI #DarkCountry #GothicAmericana #CreepyCarnival #Calliope #FolkHorror #Riddles #MonsterHunter #AIMusic Lyrics: Movement I: The Shadowless Farmhand Seven years since the corn ran dry, Dust on the stalks and a bone-white sky. A farmhand came to my fire by night, Stood in the glow with no shade in sight. "I traded it," Tam said, "for my sister's cure. The ink was wet and the terms looked pure. Called it a loan, said I'd have it by dawn, Now the sun's come up and my shade's still gone." Movement II: The Fair in the Stubble (Choir) Mind the husks! Mind the gate! (Choir) Spend your shadow, don't be late! Lamps in the stubble, a tent in the rows, A fair that rises where nobody goes. Carousel turning, no riders to steer, Calliope blaring a tune gone queer. (Choir) Everything's cheap! Everything's priced! (Choir) Nobody counts what they've sacrificed! Movement III: The Merchant's Stall A lamplit stall in a canvas room, Jars on the shelf in the amber gloom, Each one holding a shadow, thin and slow. The Merchant stood in a coat of night, Tall black hat and a smile too polite. Movement IV: The Riddles Merchant: Three riddles, warden. Answer true, and the shade goes home with you. Miss one, and I take a memory. Gront: And if I answer all three? Merchant: Then you walk out whole. Nobody has. First one. What stretches long when the sun goes low? Gront: A shadow. Merchant: Yes. Second one. What breaks the moment you speak its name? Gront: Silence. Merchant: ...Yes. Half the crowd has gone. Have you noticed? Third one. What weighs nothing in your hand... ...but bows the back... ...and bows the head? Gront: ...Grief. Merchant: Close. Close is a miss. The word was regret. Gront: ...Take it. Movement V: The Price He sealed it in glass and set it high: The name of the first town that took me in. Gone. And the calliope's tune wore thin. (Choir) Wrong by a word! Pay what's owed! Movement VI: The Warden's Riddle Gront: One of mine, now. Merchant: That's the house rule. Ask. Gront: What burns without heat, and needs no wick? And shows every shadow its owner? Merchant: A candle. Gront: No. Merchant: ...The sun. Gront: No. Merchant: ...A mirror. Gront: Not that either. (Choir) Answer or pay! Answer or pay! Movement VII: The Cold Blue Light I thumbed the shutter. Cold blue light filled the air. Glass went off like a string of shot, Shadows poured out in a long dark knot. Home to their owners, thin and pale. The Merchant lunged with a gloved white hand, Grasping at ink on the dry black land. Merchant: "The house rules held. The debt's gone slack." He bowed once, slow, and the tents folded back. (Choir) Go home, shadows! Go home, names! [Instrumental Finale: Calliope, Saw & Flatpicking Duel] Movement VIII: Dawn on the Stubble Dawn came up on the stubble field, Not a tent stake left, not a lamp, not a wheel. Tam stood tall with his shadow back, Long and dark on the cracked dirt track. I couldn't tell you that first town's name, A small price paid, and I'd pay the same.
