Madden Trailer Explained: The Name You Know, the Story You Don't

Madden is the new David O. Russell movie, with Nicolas Cage as John Madden and Christian Bale as Al Davis. It opens in select theaters on November 11, 2026, and comes to Prime Video on November 18. Most of the talk about this trailer has been about the fat suit. I think the trailer's own title cards say more. The name you know. The story you don't. So I went through it shot by shot and checked what actually happened. Some of the names on the lockers after Super Bowl XI are real Raiders from that team, and a couple joined later. The bleeding ulcer, the retirement at 42, the fear of flying and the Madden Cruiser bus are all real. So is the fight with EA over eleven players a side, which took about four years and ended with John Madden Football on the Apple II in 1988. The N.W.A tape on the bus is another story, and I explain why I wouldn't take that scene as history.
