Open Water -- Ace of Null
From the album Afterglow, track 6
Open Water is progressive house in the sense the genre took on in the 2010s: long, patient builds, a plucked synth melody as the hook, and a breakdown that turns that hook into something you could play on a piano at home. The plucked lead is the sound most associated with the style, a short bright note whose brightness falls away almost instantly, so a melody made of them feels like light glinting on water, which is where the title came from. The progression C#m-A-E-B starts in the minor and climbs into the major, the most hopeful of the four-chord loops, and the melody is written to rise with it, ending each four-bar phrase on a long held note over the B chord that wants to go home. In the drop the chords are held by a wide supersaw that ducks under every kick, so the whole mix breathes in time; that pumping is the genre's signature as much as any melody.
Composed and produced by Ace of Null.
Recorded instruments: cellos, cymbals, piano, violins.
