Neon Drive

Neon Drive -- Ace of Null From the album Afterglow, track 4 Neon Drive is a synthwave track: the 2010s revival of 1980s film-score synth pop, with the night-highway imagery that the genre is known for. Everything in it is synthesized, on purpose, because the style is defined by its instruments: a square-wave arpeggio running sixteenths like a sequencer, a saw bass that jumps octaves on the eighth notes, a wide detuned pad, and a snare sent into a huge reverb so every backbeat sounds like it is happening in an empty parking garage. I wrote it as a song rather than a club track, with a verse and a chorus, because synthwave borrows its structure from pop. The verse melody sits low on a plain square wave and the chorus answers it an octave up on a brighter saw lead; in the last chorus both play together, which is the moment the piece has been driving toward.
