You can make yourself easy to want and almost impossible to know. Know which story to tell. Know what to leave at home. Look like you're staying while keeping one foot near the door. THE VERSION I SOLD YOU starts with somebody admitting that he helped build the window another person fell in love with. He knows the pitch because he made it. The loneliness inside that arrangement belongs to him too. The storefront runs through the song: polished glass, a desirable display, somebody disappearing behind the thing being sold. Then the language moves into a shared home, where flowers, perfume and two toothbrushes can make confinement look ordinary. Those details matter. A relationship can appear settled while both people keep cutting pieces off themselves to make it fit. The lyric keeps asking what safety costs when the price is being less honest, less visible, less whole. The change comes when an empty chair becomes preferable to a convincing performance. "Bring the scar without the spin" is an invitation with responsibility attached: bring the truth, and stop asking the other person to redeem or complete you. The final chorus changes the admission into a refusal to keep disappearing. Desire is still welcome. Closeness is still welcome. Neither should require a sales pitch. The arrangement directions trace that exposure closely. Felt piano, a dry room and an almost-spoken baritone are the starting point; bass, brushed snare, tremolo guitar and organ are introduced as the confession grows. The brief asks for fuller band weight at the choruses, then a return to piano and space when the lyric chooses honesty. That stripped-back turn gives the decision somewhere to stand without dressing it up as a triumph. The ending leaves a real cost on the table. Some rooms will empty. Some hands will stop reaching. But the person who stays will know who is actually there. That is the standard this song keeps coming back to: enough room for the whole person, even when the whole person is harder to sell.
