ILLINOIS 1957 Cold Case Solved After 55 Years — The Neighbor Took Her From the Corner On a snowy December evening in 1957, seven-year-old Maria Ridulph disappeared from a quiet street corner in Sycamore, Illinois. She had been playing with her friend when a young man calling himself “Johnny” approached the girls. Moments later, Maria was gone. Her disappearance launched a massive search, but Maria would not be found alive. Her remains were discovered nearly five months later in a wooded area in Jo Daviess County, roughly 100 miles from her hometown. For decades, the case remained unsolved. Then, 55 years after Maria vanished, investigators reopened the case. A former neighborhood resident, Jack McCullough — who had been known as John Tessier in 1957 — was eventually arrested and convicted in 2012 for Maria's kidnapping and murder. The case was widely described at the time as one of America's oldest cold cases to reach a conviction. But the story did not end there. New evidence, including telephone records and previously excluded investigative material, raised serious questions about the conviction. McCullough's conviction was ultimately overturned, and in 2017 he was formally declared innocent.
