66 million years ago, the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs left the planet in ruins. Forests burned, the sky went dark, and almost nothing over 25 kilograms survived. Within 300,000 years, mammals that had been mouse-sized for 160 million years began to double in size, then triple, filling niches the dinosaurs left empty.
For 10 million years, the Earth belonged to experimental forms. Carnivores with hooves chased prey on split toes. Herbivores armed with scythe claws ripped through roots and bark. Fanged browsers the size of rhinos walked on their knuckles because their skeletons couldn't support their own weight. These weren't evolutionary dead ends, they were the rough drafts, testing every possible body plan before natural selection refined the blueprints.
Five of those lineages vanished completely when the climate shifted 56 million years ago. Two survived, and their descendants became horses, whales, primates, and every other large mammal alive today. The seven strange mammals were the bridge between the age of reptiles and the age of us, and paleontologists are still pulling their fossils out of the ground, rewriting the story with every dig.
