The Other 50% of Leadership | What Success Was Costing Me

I was working 60 to 80 hours a week, building successful businesses, traveling constantly, and providing for my family. By every measure I knew, I was succeeding. Then came a moment I will never forget. My wife was in labor with our second son, and I was still taking business calls. Weeks later, as I prepared to leave for another business trip, my oldest son looked at me and said, “Daddy, don’t go.” We both cried. I knew something had to change. In this keynote, I share the story of the senseis who shaped my life, beginning with my fourth grade teacher, Mr. O’Brien, who saw possibility in a young boy struggling with dyslexia. I share how my parents, both Zen priests, taught me integrity and structure, and how my martial arts teachers taught me humility, discipline, and the power of vision. These teachings eventually became the foundation of what I call Integrated Leadership. True leadership extends beyond professional success. It includes four essential areas of life: • Work and legacy • Relationships and family • Physical health and vitality • Spiritual practice and inner mastery For years, I was succeeding in one area while neglecting the others. The turning point came when I recognized that I needed another sensei in my life. Someone who could see the best in me and challenge me to live into it. This talk is an invitation to examine your own life. Where are you operating at 50% of your potential?
