Packrafting the New River Dries | Water Returns to a Legendary West Virginia Run

The New River Dries has water again — so it was time to get on the river. The New River Dries is a unique section of the New River in West Virginia where much of the river's flow is normally diverted for hydroelectric power generation, leaving this historic whitewater stretch with dramatically reduced flows. When water returns to the Dries, however, so does the whitewater. Over Labor Day weekend, I joined members of the Coastals Canoe Club for a run through the New River Dries — and for me, it was another first: my first trip down the Dries in a packraft.
